Let’s start with a rapid fire. Try answering them as you proceed :
- With which of the following do you eat your food ; mouth or nose?
- What do use to walk : a pair of hands or a pair of feet?
- Which time of the day do you go to work for : before sunrise or after sunrise?
- What do you use to see or sense : your eyes/a sense organ or your hair?
- Any other habit of yours ?
Didn’t you expect some better questions?
Aren’t the answers to most of the above questions too obvious.
Aren’t all these actually our daily habits that we follow hand over fist (effortlessly)? If your answer to the last question is a ‘Yes’, you have just been allowed a tip !
Initially We Define Our Habits
Have you ever noticed a very common pattern that knits our daily lives.
Have you at any account done anything twice or thrice in a day continuously for about a week ? And then noticed that if you by chance skip it on the very first day after practising it for a week, you feel something amiss.
What actually is happening over here ?
As correctly quoted,
We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.
– John Dryden
The activity gets encoded into your brain at such an extent after exercising it for several connected days, that your brain triggers in you a cupidity to perform the same activity for the upcoming days, without your itch or plan to do it. Like,
- Even if you don’t check your wristwatch to see if its noon enough for you to have your mid-meal (lunch), your stomach shall make your appetite arise at exactly about the noon time. And then, you wait for the bell to go to disperse for the break time if you are in an office at work or in a school to study
- Even if you don’t remember to breathe consciously, you actually are always breathing !
… and so on.
And then, Our Habits Define Us
If you wanna be successful, the very first thing you ought to do today is to discipline yourself.
And where from does this discipline comes from? How should I, who have never obeyed any of the rules set by the parents, teachers or the government, obey the rules I set for me? What sort of rules do I set? What exactly is discipline?
Self discipline is a drill or a training to submit oneself to his/her ‘Willpower‘ and to observe a code of ‘Self-Mastery‘.
Heavy words !!
This workout of Self-Mastery akin to the gym workout would be a change easy to begin with but a difficult one to carry and stick on to. And you only benefit from the gym if you keep it going without chill outs and take it easy breaks. Same goes with the change to go in for self-control.
Anything that we wish to go down the line as a change in our lives is never smooth. But there is a way it can be made easier.( Mind my words not as easy that anyone and everyone can achieve it! You’ll still have to work hard for it, to be worth it. )
Where there is a will there is a way. And the way here is to ‘Try and Try and Repeat and Repeat.’ All you are necessitated to do is to simply repeat, and repeat, and repeat, and repeat, …
till you reach the limit, and then repeat again and again and again, pushing beyond the limits.
Repeat even then.
Do not make excuses.
Do never forsake the activities that will lead you to your dreams.
Keep going on.
Don’t Stop. And, repeat on and on relentlessly.
Till it comes to be your habit. Up until it turns out to be a style of course, an inclination or a ‘Habit‘. And then repeat again(But, this time it would become effortless. And finally you will start enjoying it. But only after you have endured the initial resistance and pain, without repudiating)
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
– Will Durant
The Power Of Repetition
With repetition the habit becomes an automatic reflex. And then, we follow the habit of Self-Mastery unencumbered by any of the burdens. A habit that will ignite in us positive thinking. We will then have a clear view of what we dream. It will become apparent in our mind, the blueprint of our aim or dream.
And this will 99.99% lead you to Successful Outcomes or ‘Successfulness’. Because,
If you think you can do it, you can.
– John Burroughs
Start building positive habits. Habits are easy and effortless to follow and keep up with. This was the tip that you got in the very first lines of this page. The tip to reach your dreams is to make the hard work, the discipline, the self-control, the small changes you wish to take up ( like beginning to read a book daily, or to study the morning newspaper to keep up with the G.K or to start a diet or to learn a lesson each day to make up for your exam or to … for just any small or large change) a habit.
These mountains that you are carrying , you were only supposed to climb.
– Najwa Zebian
